While its rival, Impossible Foods, faces a shortage of herbal burgers, Beyond Meat said Thursday it has the ability to compete with all the restaurant chains.
"I do not see any hardware barriers or manufacturing hurdles that prevent, in the right timeframe and structure, from taking on many of the biggest QSRs in the market," said CEO Ethan Brown. analysts at the company's first earnings conference call.
Consumers have urged McDonald's to add a vegan burger to its menu after many of its fast-food competitors have already done so. But adding a plant-based meat substitute would involve finding a provider capable of meeting the demand of about 14,000 locations in the United States.
This year Burger King is deploying a Whopper made from Impossible Foods herbal burgers in its 7,200 US stores, following a vigorous demand in an experimental market. However, Impossible also struggled to catch up with the surging demand despite the increase in the number of employees and the transfer of its manufacturing facilities. Impossible did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNBC.
Beyond addressed its own supply issues in 2017 and 2018. Mr. Brown said the company felt it could handle the demand for the next two years.
"I do not see anyone there who would break our system, provided we do it in a way that has the pace and the plan to become the widest possible distribution point," he said. .
McDonald's executives said they looked forward to seeing how a meat-based meat substitute would generate higher customer traffic, given that adding menus would increase the complexity of cooking , which could translate into slower service.
Shares of Beyond Meat climbed 23% Thursday after the company released its quarterly results for the first time since its release. Beyond reported net sales of $ 40.2 million, up 215% over last year, and a net loss of 14 cents per share on a pro forma basis.
The company expects its revenues to exceed $ 210 million in 2019, more than double the net sales of last year.
