President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris continue the transition to the White House with 71 days until inauguration day, despite the Trump administration’s refusal to take the formal steps necessary to secure a transfer of power smoothly.
By law, Biden-Harris transition teams cannot begin meeting with current government officials or gain access to secure facilities to work with classified information until the head of the little-known General Service Administration (GSA ) does determine that the pair is likely the next president and vice president. The GSA administrator refused to make this decision.
“We believe the time has come for the GSA administrator to quickly determine Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as president-elect and vice-president-elect,” an unidentified Biden-Harris transition official said on Monday evening at the ‘a telephone point with journalists, adding the transition could pursue legal options if the administration continues to stall.
Mr Biden is meeting with transition counselors on Tuesday and will comment on a GOP-led trial of the Affordable Care Act. The Supreme Court is hear the arguments on the case Tuesday morning.
President Trump has refused to concede the election since Mr. Biden was slated to be the winner on Saturday, and his campaign is facing legal action in a handful of states disputing the results. The campaign did not produce evidence of widespread electoral fraud on a scale that would alter election results.
Attorney General William Barr has allowed U.S. lawyers across the country to “pursue substantial allegations” of voting irregularities before the 2020 election is certified, according to a memo released Monday. Barr offered no evidence of fraud stemming from last week’s election in the document.
