The Biden administration intends to shut down the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention facility by the end of its term, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday.
Speaking at his daily press briefing, Psaki said the administration has launched a process with the National Security Council to review the stages of closing the facility. She said it was “certainly our goal and our intention” to close the controversial prison, which was a priority for former President Barack Obama which he failed to fulfill.
Psaki said several political roles in the deputy cabinet are yet to be fulfilled as the administration progresses in the effort. The push to shut down the facility would be a “robust inter-agency process,” Psaki said.
