The White House sacked the Trump-appointed attorney general of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on Friday evening, following his refusal to resign.

In a final letter to President Biden on Friday morning, Sharon Gustafson said she had “respectfully” declined the White House’s request to resign, noting that she had only served half of her four-year term.

“I intend to honor this commitment,” she wrote in a letter published by the Center for Ethics and Public Policy. “I have confidently given this advice to countless besieged clients over the past 25 years: hold your head up, do your best, and don’t quit under pressure. I stand in solidarity with them, I will take that advice.” , she added. .

Gustafson was informed less than three hours later by the deputy director of the Presidential Office of White House personnel, Gautam Raghavan, in an email that his job would be “terminated” as of 5 p.m. Friday evening.

Gustafson, the first woman to serve as general counsel at the EEOC, noted that her dismissal was highly irregular and that never before had a general counsel been dismissed for “being appointed by the wrong political party”.

In her letter to Biden, she accused the administration of suppressing its work on religious discrimination by removing press releases, reports and podcasts from the EEOC website after its inauguration.

“I can only assume that my resignation would be followed by a similar suppression of our work to promote religious freedom,” Gustafson wrote.

Republicans condemned the move as a political attack and underscored Biden’s campaign promise to end partisan fighting in Washington.

“He’s a model. President Biden is calling for an end to ‘partisan warfare’, only to turn around and demand that Senate-confirmed officials resign so he can make room for his friends to leave. left, ”said the North Carolina Republican. said in a statement.

“President Biden should take note of Advocate General Gustafson, who has kept his pledge and refused to bow to partisan pressure. This unprecedented dismissal of an honorable official that took place just hours after he was asked to resign is unwarranted and should be rescinded immediately. ”Foxx said.
