The Biden administration announced this week that it has opened a soft-sided facility for immigrants in Donna, Texas, as Republican lawmakers warn of a “growing crisis” on the US-Mexico border.
In a statement to Fox News, a spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Patrol said the agency’s centralized processing center in McAllen, Texas, was undergoing renovations, which required additional facilities.
The main focus of Donna’s site will be to process those detained by the US Border Patrol.
“Donna’s location was chosen because it is at the heart of border patrol posts throughout the Rio Grande Valley area,” a spokesperson for the US Customs and Border Patrol said.

The facility will initially accommodate around 700 migrant children, although capacity can be added as needed. The government plans to start housing unaccompanied foreign children who have been released from COVID-19 quarantine in Carrizo Springs in just over a week. It will not accommodate children under 13.
The centers open as apprehensions at the border climb in hopes of easing restrictions under the current administration, as previously reported by Fox News.

The Department of Homeland Security noted that there has been a steady increase in border encounters since April, triggered by conditions brought on by the pandemic and natural disasters.
House Republicans wrote to Biden this week warning of a “growing crisis of illegal immigration” on the southern border. Lawmakers said CBP officials saw average daily throughput increase to 3,500 from 2,000 last month.
By law, the government is required to provide care to unaccompanied foreign children who do not have immigration status in the United States, no legal guardian in the United States, and who are not yet 18 years old.
