“We’re putting a plan in place that I feel very confident in, and I don’t care what the other guy is doing,” Biden told reporters as he left Delaware to return to Washington, DC.

Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Saturday that he could visit the border “in the next few weeks,” saying members of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the border patrol want to see the former president make a appearance.

“I don’t think I’m in a rush to leave,” Trump told Jeanine Pirro.

Trump has made cracking down on legal and illegal immigration a cornerstone of his tenure, and the former president has repeatedly criticized his successor for his immigration policies in recent weeks as the Biden administration grapples with an influx of young migrants to the southern border.

The Biden administration is refusing many of the thousands of migrants who have made the dangerous journey from Mexico and the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. But the United States under Biden is still accepting unaccompanied minors, who have arrived in record numbers.

The United States has custody of at least 15,000 migrant children as of the end of last week, and the federal government has struggled to secure enough housing for all, especially during the pandemic.

Biden and his senior officials blamed the Trump administration, saying they inherited a broken immigration system that will take time to rebuild to adequately address the issue.

But Republicans argued that Biden’s early return to Trump-era policies had encouraged migrants to make the trip to the United States, believing they were more likely to be accepted at the border.

Biden announced last week that he was putting Vice President Harris in charge of the border issue.
