The Biden administration “will begin the transition process” of dismissing all Senate-confirmed US lawyers appointed under the Trump administration, with two exceptions, a senior Justice Department official said.
The process could start as early as Tuesday. They will be invited to resign.
John Durham will remain in place to investigate the origins of the Russia investigation, but not as the U.S. Connecticut district attorney, the official said. He was appointed special advocate and received additional protections for the investigation by Attorney General William Barr last fall.
David Weiss, an American lawyer from Delaware, will also remain in place. Hunter Biden, the president’s son, said in December that federal officials in Delaware were investigating his taxes.

American lawyers are the principal federal prosecutors for their districts and are appointed politicians.
In 2017, President Donald Trump abruptly ordered the resignation of 46 U.S. lawyers who remained from the Obama administration.
When Trump ordered the resignations in 2017, a then-Justice Department statement said action had been taken “as was done in previous transitions.”
In 1993, Attorney General Janet Reno demanded the resignation of 93 American lawyers at the start of the Clinton administration.
