Biden overturns Trump’s classical architectural order

The executive order, signed in the dying moments of the Trump presidency, was quickly condemned by architects as aesthetically short-sighted, although it was relatively little implemented. The order placed only a preference for classical styles in future buildings and did not outright ban brutalism.

“While we are appalled by the administration’s decision to go ahead with the design mandate, we are pleased that the order is not as far as it was previously thought,” said Robert Ivy, CEO of the American Institute of Architects, in a statement at The Time.

It was one of many Trump-era executive orders that the White House Biden declared void on Wednesday. Biden also rescinded an order threatening funding for cities that the Trump administration felt had cut support for local police amid the summer’s anti-racism protests. Biden also launched executive action that halted new visas amid the coronavirus economic crisis.
