The Biden administration says it will start with a slew of executive orders on day one.
President-elect Joe Biden’s new chief of staff said in a note to reporters that Biden would cap a busy day of inauguration pageantry by using the powers of his new office to push for policy changes on housing, loans students, climate change and immigration.
Executive steps to be taken on Wednesday include returning the Paris climate accords, rescinding a travel ban in several Muslim-majority countries, extending a hiatus on federal student loan payments, shutting down evictions and seizures, as well as the putting on of masks in interstate travel and on federal property.
Most of the measures are a reversal of the policies followed by Trump and do not require action by Congress. But Biden will also unveil a long-awaited immigration proposal that would provide a pathway to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants who require action from Congress.
The move, along with Biden’s recent proposal of $ 1.9 trillion in spending on COVID vaccinations and economic stimulus, faces tough battles in a Congress tightly controlled by Biden’s fellow Democrats.
New chief of staff Ron Klain said a broader set of executive orders would come in the days following the inauguration. These measures include expanding COVID-19 testing and directing the government to products made in the United States.
