President Joe Biden has dismissed Dr Sean Conley as head of the White House medical unit, the Associated Press reported Monday.

Biden appointed Dr Kevin O’Connor as the White House’s chief medical officer instead.

O’Connor has been Biden’s doctor since 2009 and served while Biden was vice president, ABC News reported.

Conley is due to start a teaching position at the University of Maryland Health Sciences Uniform Services, the AP said.

Conley, who was appointed by President Donald Trump in 2018, has been accused of misleading the public about Trump’s diagnosis of COVID-19 in October.

Conley was criticized for his lack of transparency when he provided updates on Trump’s condition, declining to say whether Trump had received oxygen. He was also accused of exaggerating the president’s state of health at the time.

Earlier this year, Conley treated Trump with hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug that experts say is not effective in treating COVID-19 and may even have dangerous side effects.

The Food and Drug Administration in June revoked its authorization for emergency use of the drug for patients with COVID-19.

“When President Trump took the initial treatment with hydroxychloroquine, there was already a lot of evidence – and now there is even more – that there was no benefit. In fact, there was a lot of potential damage in cardiac arrhythmias or other adverse effects, ”Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, previously told Insider.

Two sources told NBC News in May that many in the White House medical unit believed Conley had been promoted without the proper vetting.

The best doctor in the White House is often from the military; O’Connor is a retired army colonel.

O’Connor was called to action late last year when Biden tripped, fell and broke his foot while playing with one of his dogs at his home in Delaware.

Trump had often attacked Biden as senile. The Biden campaign released an O’Connor assessment in December 2019 that described Biden as “fit to successfully perform the duties of the presidency, including those of managing director, head of state and commander-in-chief.”
