President Biden on Monday signed an executive order intended to increase federal purchases of products made in the United States, describing it as a step towards rebuilding “America’s backbone” and strengthening the middle class.

“Today we get to work to rebuild America’s backbone – manufacturing, unions, the middle class. It is based on the simple premise that we will reward work and not wealth in this country, ”Biden said in a White House address. “The key board of the future will be made in America.”

The ordinance, the text of which has not been released by the White House, aims to strengthen the rules surrounding the Buy American Act requiring federal agencies to purchase products made in the United States, administration officials say.

He will create a new leadership role in the White House’s Office of Management and Budget to oversee the administration’s implementation of the administration’s “Made in America” initiative to reduce unnecessary waivers for agencies to purchase products. products made abroad. It will also order officials to create a website where waivers can be viewed publicly to help other companies compete.

The ordinance also aims to increase domestic content requirements and improve the way domestic content is measured in order to address gaps exploited by companies, officials said.

He will also direct agencies to use the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, a network of small and medium-sized businesses across the country that Biden says would help secure contracts with communities historically excluded from government procurement.

“It’s a critical part of rebuilding our economy and including everyone in a deal this time around, especially the small businesses that are badly suffering from this economy,” Biden said.

Former President TrumpDonald Trump More than two-thirds of Americans approve of Biden’s response to coronavirus: poll Sarah Huckabee Sanders is running for president of Mexican governor testing positive for COVID-19 PLUS signed a similar ordinance a few months after taking office that sought to tighten visa rules for skilled foreign workers and urged the government to fully enforce “Buy American” laws.

But Biden accused the previous administration of not taking the issue “seriously enough” and said “tens of billions” of taxpayer dollars were intended to support foreign industries and jobs.

Monday’s executive order, Biden said, “would tighten existing ‘Buy American’ policies and go further.”

Biden characterized the order as a step in the larger economic plan he presented during his campaign to stimulate American industries and help end reliance on products made abroad at a moment when American businesses are suffering severely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Biden said his long-term plan would involve the federal government investing in products made in the United States to rebuild U.S. infrastructure and purchase clean electric cars to spur job creation.

The president also noted that the pandemic has exposed weaknesses in U.S. supply chains and underscored the need for the country to produce its own protective gear and essential supplies.

“The reason we have to do this is that America cannot stand aside in the race for the future,” Biden said. “To ensure America’s future is made, we must win not only the jobs of today, but also the jobs and industries of tomorrow. We know the middle class built this country and we also know that unions build the middle class. So, let’s invest in them again.
