President Biden celebrated his close relationship with the unions on Monday during an unscheduled Labor Day trip to a local branch of the Delaware International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, noting their critical role in advancing his political career .
Biden met with the union leadership, including IBEW President Lonnie Stephenson. He interacted with some workers during the short visit, saying at one point that union members were the supporters who “got me to the dance,” according to Bloomberg’s Jennifer Epstein.
The president brought sandwiches from a local Italian sub-store and spoke with the mother of a trade unionist by cell phone. He left about 30 minutes after arriving.
The union hall was a short drive from Biden’s residence in Wilmington, Delaware, where he spent Labor Day weekend. The president flew to Delaware from Louisiana on Friday, where he saw the damage caused by Hurricane Ida.

Biden has drawn criticism from Republicans in recent days for his decision to return home for Labor Day weekend despite the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan.
IBEW Local 313 was established in 1902 and has 700 active members. Union workers helped local communities that suffered damage from the hurricane by working on residential houses.

Biden has cultivated even closer ties with the unions in recent months. In April, he created a White House task force to explore ways to improve the ability of unions to bargain collectively with employers.
