President Biden appeared to forget the name of Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Wednesday night as he unveiled a key pact on nuclear submarines – calling him “buddy” and “that guy over there”.
The 78-year-old commander-in-chief – known for his hiccups – was flanked by Morrison and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on giant screens as they unveiled the new AUKUS military alliance.
“Thanks, Boris, and I want to thank, uh… that guy from Down Under,” Biden said after a pause as he turned to the screen with Morrison, who had already spoken.
“Thanks a lot, mate. Appreciate him, Prime Minister, ”he said, getting a nudge from Morrison, whom he called one of“ America’s closest allies ”.
As Biden finally addressed “Prime Minister Morrison” in his pre-written speech, the latest apparent mistake was picked up by Australian media – and quickly ignited Twitter.
“The guy downstairs has a name. How embarrassing “, a Briton named Dom M replied to Biden’s tweeted link video from the press conference.
” Just one tip for public speaking – if you’re going to mention someone by name, write it down, ”one named Meegan Biden also tweeted.
“HOW DO YOU NOT REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE PRIME MINISTER. “That guy down there… thanks buddy” was honestly so embarrassing. “
“I don’t understand how Americans vote for him,” said one Australian Adam tweeted, noting how Biden always seems “very forgetful.”
Some Australians who are not fans of their Prime Minister, however, seemed to revel in the apparent slippage, saying it made their day.
“Give it a little slack. Many of us Australians want to forget the name of our Prime Minister, ”someone named Paul W tweeted, while a Twitter user named Sandra joked, “I have to say this is the the most beautiful thing he’s been called in a long time.”
“This guy from below got the respect he deserves. In fact, he got more than he deserves ”, she tweeted.
