Biden set to name Neera Tanden and Cecilia Rouse to economics team

President-elect Joe Biden is expected to appoint Neera Tanden to head the Office of Management and Budget and Cecilia Rouse to chair the Council of Economic Advisers, three people familiar with the process confirmed to NBC News on Sunday.

He is also expected to appoint Adewale “Wally” Adeyemo as Assistant Treasury Secretary alongside Janet Yellen, NBC News has learned.

The Wall Street Journal first announced the expected appointments.

Biden is expected to introduce members of his economics team on Tuesday in Wilmington.

The planned appointments come the same day Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris announced their all-female communications team.

Tanden is president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, a liberal think tank, and former director of domestic policy for the Obama-Biden presidential campaign.

The apparent choice prompted an immediate retreat from left and right, with Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas communications director, citing a “Endless stream of derogatory comments” about GOP senators that Tanden will have to confirm to the post.

She “has no chance of being confirmed,” tweeted Drew Brandewie.

Brianna Joy Gray, former press secretary for Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential race, critical Tanden as “openly disdainful” of Vermont independence and its coalition.

“It’s almost as if they don’t want progressives to support the national Democratic candidates in the future,” Gray added.

Rouse, economist, is dean of the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Earlier this year, she led a letter signed by dozens of economists advocating for more action to stem the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

If confirmed, she would be the first woman of color to chair the board, according to the Journal.

Adeyemo was a senior adviser on international economics to former President Barack Obama and was appointed last year as the first president of the Obama Foundation.
