President-elect Joe Biden announced on Friday that he would make a Cabinet-level post at the White House science summit for the first time in U.S. history.
The big picture: Biden said he chose Eric Lander to be his presidential science adviser and that he would appoint the geneticist as director of the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy. Biden also announced other key members of his scientific team, including Francis Collins, who will remain director of the National Institutes of Health.
The White House science team includes:
- Lander, who will be appointed director of the OSTP and will be the presidential scientific adviser.
- Alondra Nelson, who will serve as OSTP’s Deputy Director for Science and Society.
- Frances Arnold and Maria Zuber, who will serve as external co-chairs of the Presidential Council of Science and Technology Advisors.
- Collins, who will continue to lead the NIH.
- Kei Koizumi, who will serve as the OSTP Chief of Staff.
- Narda Jones, who will serve as PSTO’s Director of Legislative Affairs
What he says: “Science will always be at the forefront of my administration – and these world-renowned scientists will ensure that everything we do is based on science, fact and truth,” Biden said in a statement.
- “Their trusted advice will be essential as we unite to end this pandemic, bring our economy back, and pursue new breakthroughs to improve the quality of life for all Americans.”
