The country is expected to exceed 500,000 coronavirus deaths on Monday.

“In the evening, the President will deliver remarks on Lives Lost to COVID-19 in Cross Hall. The First Lady, the Vice President and the Second Gentleman will be present, ”the White House said in a press release.

“Then the president, the first lady, the vice-president and the second gentleman will organize a minute of silence and a ceremony of lighting candles at sunset in the south portico.”

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, the United States confirmed 498,879 deaths on Sunday evening. Globally, the United States has reported the most deaths from the coronavirus outside of any other country. Brazil, the country with the second highest number of coronavirus deaths, reported about half the amount from the United States.

The day before his inauguration, Biden held a lighting ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial to honor those who have died of COVID-19. Biden has pledged to vaccinate at least 100 million people during his first 100 days in office.
