The Associated Press and The Washington Post verified two claims last week that the Biden administration deceptively used it to sell its climate change agenda to the American public.
President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that an overhaul of transportation infrastructure to support a new fleet of electric vehicles would create “1 million new jobs in the US auto industry.” Biden said his administration could accomplish the feat by committing to replace the federal government’s 650,000-car fleet with electric models and creating incentives and regulations for the transition of U.S. transportation infrastructure to electric vehicles.
The Associated Press verified the president’s claims on Thursday, describing the chances that Biden’s plan will result in 1 million new jobs as “far from certain, if not unlikely.” Many experts as well as the United Auto Workers have said Biden’s plan will result in a net loss of jobs in the transportation sector. The AP reports:
There is a lot of skepticism about this claim. At least some of these new auto jobs would come at the expense of current jobs. Auto industry analysts fail to see how a net gain of 1 million auto jobs can come from Biden’s plan.
One million new jobs in the auto industry is a very ambitious goal that would mean more than doubling the number of workers currently employed in the manufacturing of motor vehicles and parts.
Many analysts and the United Auto Workers union, in fact, have warned that manufacturing electric vehicles would likely mean fewer net jobs in auto manufacturing.
Since taking office, Biden has taken a number of executive steps to combat the development and production of fossil fuels. John Kerry, the president’s special climate envoy, said on Wednesday that jobs lost in the fossil fuel industry would be replaced by other jobs in the green energy sector, such as solar energy technician.
“You know, you look at the black lung consequences for a miner, for example, and you measure that against the fastest growing job in the United States before COVID became a solar energy technician,” Kerry said. “The same people can do this work, but the choice to go solar is now a better choice. Likewise, you have the second fastest growing job before COVID was as a wind turbine technician. “
The Washington Post published two Pinocchios in Kerry for his claim. He botched the claim that solar panel and wind technicians were the first and second fastest growing jobs, respectively, during the pandemic. Citing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Post found that “[w]ind is ahead of solar, not the other way around, and these occupations are expected to be the first and third fastest growing jobs, not the first and second.
However, disregarding that mistake, the Post said Kerry got her two Pinocchio rating for the claim that solar and wind jobs could replace losses to the coal industry. The Post did not attempt to account for the oil and gas job losses to Biden’s executive actions. The Post reported:
For the purposes of this fact-checking, we are more interested in the number of jobs represented by these percentages. After all, in the White House, Kerry mentioned these statistics in the context of jobs in the coal mines – “The same people can do these jobs” – which before the pandemic were about 50,000 jobs (and about 30,000 under the area). Could these solar and wind jobs match that number?
In short, no.
Jobs in wind turbines are expected to increase by 4,300, from 7,000 to 11,300 in 10 years. Jobs for solar installers are expected to increase by 6,100 from 12,000 to 18,100. This represents a total increase of just 10,400 jobs, leaving 20,000 coal workers still grappling with mining.
