Biden’s coronavirus response approval slips in new poll

The survey, conducted by Quinnipiac University, found that 53% of Americans approve of Biden’s handling of COVID-19. While still a majority approval, that number is down more than 10 points from May, when 65% of Americans approved of the work it was doing on the pandemic.

Forty percent of Americans in last week’s poll said they disapproved of the president’s handling of the coronavirus, which is a 10-point increase from the 30 percent who said they disapproved in May.

A CBS News and YouGov poll conducted just a few weeks ago in mid-July found that 66% of adults in the United States approved of Biden’s handling of COVID-19. Twenty-six percent of those polled said the president was doing a “very good” job of dealing with the pandemic, while 40 percent said he was doing a “fairly good” job.

Sixteen percent of those polled at the time said the president’s work on COVID-19 was “pretty bad” and 18% called it “very bad”.

The drop in Biden’s approval rating for his handling of COVID-19 comes as concerns grow about the highly infectious delta variant of the virus, which has taken a strong hold in the United States as the dominant coronavirus strain.

The variant, which is more transmissible than other strains of COVID-19, is leading to a dramatic increase in infections in the United States, especially in areas with low vaccination rates.

In the United States, the majority of people hospitalized and died from COVID-19 in recent weeks have not been vaccinated.

Biden’s overall approval rating also slipped in the Quinnipiac poll, falling to 46% from 49% in May.

The survey interviewed 1,290 American adults nationwide between July 27 and August 2. 2. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.7 percentage points.
