White House is delaying signing a number of immigration-related executive orders that would overturn a number of Trump-era policies, Fox News has learned – just as a potential bipartisan immigration bill begins to take shape on the Hill.
President Biden was due to sign a number of immigration-related orders on Friday, including one that would create a task force to reunite separated families at the border and another to increase refugee admissions. But while the timeline has never been confirmed by the White House, Fox News has learned that some or all of those orders could be pushed back to next week. White House officials have not explained what caused the schedule change.
The orders will come following a string of immigration-related orders signed by Biden since entering the White House last week. He rolled back Trump-era travel bans and bolstered the Obama-era Deferred Action Program for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which provided deportation protection to illegal immigrants brought to the country as children.
He also signed an order suspending construction of the southern border wall, which went into effect on Wednesday. Separately, his Department of Homeland Security has issued an order staying the evictions for 100 days – but this is being challenged by a lawsuit in Texas.

Biden also proposed a sweeping immigration bill that includes an eight-year path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants, along with a host of other measures, including immediate green cards for workers. agriculture and DACA beneficiaries.
But with such a bill facing significant Republican opposition, its future is unclear, with Sen. Bob Menendez, DN.J., conceding that getting it through the Senate is a “Herculean” task.
Senator Dick Durbin, D-Ill., Is working with Senator Lindsey Graham, RS.C., on a more limited bipartisan immigration bill – potentially targeting beneficiaries of DACA and Temporary Protected Status ( TPS).
The basis for the bill will be modeled on the latest immigration proposal of 2013 – Durbin and Graham were both part of the “Gang of Eight” that created the bill. This effort passed the Senate but stagnated in the then Republican-controlled House.
Durbin confirmed Thursday afternoon that he is working with Graham on a bill.
“I think it will look like similar efforts in the past,” he said.
The final version could pick up on some elements included in Biden’s immigration package unveiled his first day in office, but talks are still early days. The White House still wants a comprehensive deal but knows that immigration cannot be an all-or-nothing problem.

On Thursday, Graham said that a more comprehensive bill like Biden had proposed would be a “hard sell” in a 50-50 Senate, and said he believed a more focused bill would be more likely to succeed. succeed.
“I just think overall immigration will be a tough sell, given this environment, but doing DACA I think it’s possible,” he said.
