Big E debuted their new theme song and brought back a gimmick for their entry during this week’s WWE episode SmackDown on FOX.
This week’s show saw former WWE Intercontinental Champions take part in a Pat Patterson tribute match at six, to honor the first Intercontinental Champion who died at the age of 79 last Wednesday. The match saw Big E, Daniel Bryan, and Rey Mysterio defeat Dolph Ziggler, Shinsuke Nakamura, and current WWE Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn. Patterson’s original Intercontinental title belt was on display at ringside during the tribute bout.
Big E has come to the ring with a new theme song performed by Rapper Wale, who is a well-known WWE fan who has appeared on WWE TV several times in recent years. Big E also brought back his weightlifting chalk entry gadget where he puts his hands on the stage before heading to the ring. This is something he did years ago when he was still known as Big E Langston.
As for the new entry theme, Big E took to Twitter after the show and said he was eternally grateful to come to the ring with Wale’s music.
“I was a @Wale fan long before anyone cares to know my name. Eternally grateful to be able to release to the music of a living legend, ”wrote Big E.
Wale replied, “We’re the future WWE Champion. You know I’ve had you for life Brother RNC”
This week’s SmackDown featured several tributes to Patterson in addition to the six-a-side game. The show opened with the entire roster on stage, including WWE CEO Vince McMahon and WWE Hall of Famer Gerald Brisco paying homage to Patterson. Michael Cole then led a ten-bell salute and a moment of silence. Following this tribute, the ThunderDome lit up with a “thank you Pat!” song. A Patterson tribute video was also shown during the show, along with several videos featuring Twitter tributes from various WWE stars.
