Big Fitbit update adds Google Assistant and new calling features

Fitbit has released a new update for its portable operating system and is adding new health and smart features to its line of devices.

Fitbit OS 5.1 is the latest update and adds functionality to Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3.

First of all, there is an adjustment that is essential to tracking SpO2. Currently, blood oxygen levels will only be recorded if your device uses the SpO2 watch face. Otherwise, this graph will not save the data. Fortunately, you can now use whatever dial you want and still get that data.

Next up is the Google Assistant, which can now replace Alexa as the voice assistant on the device.

This feature is now available to US users and will be available in other territories by the end of 2021, according to Fitbit.

And if you’re happy to continue using Alexa, now you can receive audible commands on your wrist. Previously, comments were only text-based, but we don’t know if the update will improve the usefulness and reach of Alexa. We look forward to the update to find out.

Finally, Bluetooth calling is also available. This means that users can receive calls from their smartwatch using the speakerphone and microphone on board. Users can also forward incoming calls to voicemail.

Android users will also be able to reply to text messages using their voice.

The update has been rolling out since Thursday, but we haven’t received it yet. To check if it’s ready, go to the Fitbit app> tap your profile picture> tap your device and look for the pink Update button. If it’s not there, it’s not ready.

In our reviews, we praised the new health features, especially the Fitbit Sense’s EDA stress sensor, temperature sensor, and ECG. But we criticized the smartwatch experience. These features certainly help to level things up.

And we’ll update our reviews in light of these new features.
