In a recent interview, Big Thief talked about their plans to release a brand new double album in early 2022. It’s exciting! For now, though, Big Thief is releasing new songs one or two at a time, and that’s pretty exciting too. In recent months, the group has shared new jams “Little Things”, “Sparrow” and “Certainty”. Today they dropped a nice quiet, run down number called “Change”.
On “Change”, Adrianne Lenker sings as she calmly and serenely embraces all forms of inevitable change, including death: “? ? ”She never answers the question herself.
Musically, “Change” is a relaxed acoustic ride, delivered with an almost impossible feeling of stillness and beauty. Big Thief is a great rock band when they want to be, but “Change” isn’t a rock song, and it’s still great. Instead, the band finds a loose country-rock groove and hits some glowing harmonies. Yes this This is the kind of thing Big Thief is getting into on this new album, so we’re really waiting for something.
Big Thief apparently performed “Change” at the Pitchfork Music Festival last month, but the video for that performance didn’t go around, as the music video for another song’s debut did. The group has just unveiled a series of North American 2022 tour dates, to accompany the European trek they had already announced. Below, listen to “Change” and check these dates.
