The world's largest aircraft flew its first successful flight, the US space transportation company said on Saturday.
The aircraft built by Stratolaunch has two fuselages and wingspan on the length of a football field. He flew over the Mojave desert in California for 2 hours.
"What a fantastic first flight," Stratolaunch general manager Jean Floyd said in a statement. "Today's flight continues our mission to provide a flexible alternative to ground systems."
The Stratolaunch aircraft flew its first flight over the Mojave Desert for 2.5 hours, reaching a top speed of 189 mph.
Stratolaunch was created in 2011 by the late co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen. Its goal is to make access to the orbit more affordable and accessible by launching satellites in space from an airplane rather than from the ground.
On Saturday, his plane took off from the air and space port of Mojave, about 150 km north of Los Angeles. He flew at altitudes up to 3 miles and performed many maneuvers, including a simulated landing approach.
