How did Skip Bayless react to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ divisional-round victory over the New Orleans Saints?
By beating the same old drum, of course.
Bayless has targeted Bill Belichick on several occasions this season following Tom Brady’s departure from the New England Patriots, and he did so again on Monday, a day after Tampa Bay landed his ticket to the NFC championship game.
Brady and the Bucs are one victory away from Super Bowl LV, while Belichick and the Patriots completely missed the playoffs after going 7-9 with Cam Newton under center.
“Bill Belichick is on display again not only as a coach, but also as a team builder,” Bayless said on FS1’s “Undisputed”. “Much more as a team builder than a coach. Because I thought about certain times this year, I thought his defense was pretty good. At times, they took advantage of Cam a lot. But not enough, to the point that Cam won’t come back.
Tampa Bay’s success isn’t just about Brady. Much like New England’s struggles cannot be pinned down to Belichick alone.
But optics certainly aren’t great for the Patriots right now, and Bayless can’t help but wonder if squad owner Robert Kraft more or less regrets choosing his head coach. rather than his longtime quarterback.
“Robert Kraft must shake his head – quietly; he’s never going to say it publicly, ”Bayless said. “But saying, ‘Damn, what were we thinking? Because I promise you today that you’re going to see a lot more of the No.12 Buccaneers jerseys appear in and around Boston. You look.”
Overall, it’s ridiculous to take anything away from Belichick’s legacy based on a season. The two-decade Patriots dynasty was the product of he and Brady being the best at their respective jobs.
Don’t say that to Bayless, though. He’s been all over Belichick for months, and that criticism could rise to another level if the Bucs beat the Green Bay Packers on Sunday while the Patriots stayed at home.
