Bill Belichick: Someone has to play better than Cam Newton to start over

Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said over the weekend he wasn’t too concerned about who starts quarterback in September, as head coach Bill Belichick will make that decision “when the moment is right. will come to do it ”.

McDaniels also said Cam Newton “is definitely the starter now” and Belichick has said the same thing several times this summer. Belichick took some time in a Monday morning appearance on WEEI to discuss what should happen for Mac Jones to overtake his teammate.

“The fact that Cam started last year and is here, someone should play better than him. Training camp is all about competition, ”Belichick said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com.

Belichick said that Newton is “much more comfortableThan he was in his first year with New England and noted that the offseason brought explosive players and better offensive balance to the team. It looks like the Patriots are set to give Newton a chance to play with these newcomers to kick off the regular season, but nothing is set in stone in New England yet.
