Bill Belichick’s praise of the Jets becomes excessive

Bill Belichick has given a 2-13 football team a lot of praise.

In his weekly “Belestrator” segment with Patriots.com, Belichick again gushed over Jets head coach Adam Gase and quarterback Sam Darnold, among others, as he watched the regular season finale of Sunday.

“You can see Darnold here against a Miami blitz, and he’s really making a great shot here,” Belichick said on Darnold’s video of the Jets’ Week 12 loss to the Dolphins. “He can do all the throws, the deep throws, the intermediate throws and use his back.

“… Darnold has a big arm and he’s a big guy who can fit in the pocket over there and do a good job delivering the ball.

While it’s not unusual for coaches, especially Belichick, to congratulate future opponents, the longtime Patriots head coach has apparently gone out of his way to do so.

Belichick started paying Darnold compliments on Wednesday, although many believe he has regressed this season. This has led to speculation that the Jets may select a replacement for the 23-year-old in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Gase recently took responsibility for Darnold’s struggles, but Belichick said he didn’t think there was anyone better for the job at Florham Park. There has been speculation that Gase could join Belichick’s staff next season, as Gase is expected to be sacked by the Jets after Sunday’s game.

“Coach Gase is a great game planner, he designs tough games for defense and does a good job in the call-in area as well as calling them at the right time, he has a really good feel for the pace. offensive play and so on, ”Belichick said in the video shared on Twitter Saturday.

Belichick also complimented wide receiver Jamison Crowder in the preview video, as well as defensive ends Nathan Shepherd and John Franklin-Myers, and linebacker Tarell Basham.

As for Belichick’s team, the Patriots (6-9) will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
