Maher said on her Friday show: “Now maybe we should get rid of our national anthem, but I think we should have a national anthem. ”
He continued, “I think when you go down a road where you have two different national anthems, the colleges sometimes now have… a lot of them have different graduation ceremonies for blacks and whites, separate dorms. … Here is what I mean: segregation.
“You reversed the idea. We’re coming back to it under a different name, ”he added, eliciting applause from his audience.

Maher included his comment in a larger discussion of race, saying college campuses and classrooms are becoming a “factory of social justice.”
“When people say to me sometimes, ‘Boy, you’re really going after the left these days. ” Why?’ Because you embarrass me, “Maher explained.” That’s why I’m attacking the left like you’ve never done before. ”
“I am not going to give up being a liberal,” he continued. “You take children and make them hyper-aware of race in a way that they otherwise wouldn’t be.”
The NFL’s decision to include the Black National Anthem comes after it was featured in some games the previous season, most notably at Super Bowl LV, when Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers players tied their arms as Keys performed the song.
In Thursday’s game, Keys was joined by members of the historically black Florida A&M Concert Choir as the two teams stood in both end zones on the field.

The NFL has said the song will be featured this season ahead of certain “tent games,” including the NFL draft and playoff games, as part of the league’s 10-year $ 250 million pledge for fight against racism.
The NFL will also promote its social justice campaign by displaying signs, player helmet stickers and public service announcements.
