Comedian Bill Maher criticized “canceling culture” on his HBO show Friday night and said the practice belonged to “Stalin’s Russia.”
Maher spoke of several examples of Olympic officials being fired recently for offensive jokes and explained that losing a job for telling a joke is a “purge” mentality.

“Young people have to stop praising themselves for being Nostradamus and would have expected if they had been around then anything that is unacceptable now,” Maher told his audience. “Why do we allow people who just want to fuck to always win?… It’s called a purge. It’s a mentality that belongs to Stalin’s Russia.”
Maher added: “How bad this atmosphere we live in has to be before people who say culture cancellation is exaggerated admit that it is actually madness that swallows up the world? “
