Bill Murray mourns the death of his older brother, Ed, whose death was announced on Monday.
“It is with the biggest of hearts that we announce the passing of legend Ed Murray,” began a post on the actor’s William Murray Golf clothing Instagram page.
Ed was named in honor of the patriarch of the Murray family and is credited with introducing the clan to “this wonderful game of golf,” from the age of 10 when he began caddying at Indian Hills. Country Club in Illinois.
The post also noted how Ed, the recipient of a special scholarship during his college days, inspired one of the beloved characters in the 1980 comedy “Caddyshack”.
“Ed was the recipient of the Evans Scholarship in 1963 while attending Northwestern University – a scholarship awarded to golf cadets – a family scenario that inspired the character of Danny Noonan in ‘Caddyshack’ when Brian Doyle-Murray co-wrote that iconic storyline, ”the post notes.
“Ed and the five Murray brothers are also members of the Caddy Hall of Fame – something all the boys are proud of, because this game has helped shape their lives,” the post added, a nod to the induction of the family in 2015.
The post also said the loss of Ed “is a hole that will never be filled.”
“Thank you for always being so gracious, Ed. Our hearts are with his lovely family,” the post concluded. “Rest in paradise, with a true father and a sweet and gentle soul. May we honor your memory from this day forward.
Bill Murray, 70, starred in “Caddyshack” as field goalie Carl Spackler, and Ed received “special recognition” in the end credits, according to USA Today.
