The Miami Dolphins announced the elevation of defensive back Jamal Perry from the practice squad on Saturday for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. Perry, who primarily played as a cornerback during his three seasons with the Dolphins, has been working security for much of training camp this year. He’s been in 28 games with the Dolphins, including seven starts, with 72 tackles, one interception and seven assists defended. He also has 14 tackles on special teams.
Perry was originally part of the Dolphins’ 53-player roster this year, but was lifted a day later to make room for defensive back Elijah Campbell. The Dolphins received Campbell on waivers from the New York Jets following the final round of roster reduction.
Raising Perry could be an early signal for Miami’s defensive game plan against the Bills. Defensive tackle Raekwon Davis was placed on the injured list earlier in the week, but the Dolphins haven’t bred another defensive lineman to provide depth. Instead, they added a defensive back, which could indicate the team’s plan to ensure there are multiple players in the secondary throughout the game to limit the targets for the quarterbacks. Bills Josh Allen.
Starting last year and through this season, the league allows teams to elevate a player from the practice squad to the active roster for game day, without having to sign him on the roster of 53 players. The player immediately returns to the practice squad after the match, eliminating the requirement to expose them to waivers before re-signing with the practice squad. Players can be bred twice during the season in this manner before they need to be put on the active roster at any other time the team wishes to have them available for the match. This is the first elevation for Perry.
The Dolphins host the Bills at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
