DENVER – An Aurora family made quite a trip to Texas on Tuesday after concerns from a Frontier Airlines passenger caused an unpleasant experience with law enforcement.
Lakeyjanay Bailey, a 21-year-old black woman, was traveling from Denver to Dallas with her 4-year-old adopted sister, Olivia, who is white.
When the couple landed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, authorities were waiting for them inside the gate.
“There were two policemen, and they came up to me and said, ‘Are you okay if we talk to you?’” Bailey said.
An officer asked Olivia, “if she knows me and what am I to her, and he asked what my mother was to her.” A series of other questions would follow.
According to an incident report from the DFW Department of Public Safety, officers responded to a request from Frontier Airlines for law enforcement to meet them at the boarding gate.
According to Bailey, officers spoke with her mother and a social worker to confirm certain information. Then they followed the couple to the baggage claim before talking to the person who picked it up.
“The whole time they were talking with us, people just kept looking at us, whispering and everything,” Bailey said.
The incident report says Frontier Airlines asked police to investigate the case after a passenger on the plane was concerned about a possible human trafficking incident involving a woman born in 2001 who was traveling with a woman born in 2017.
For Bailey, the underlying factor is obvious.
“If the roles were changed and it was a white person getting off the plane with a black person, like a black child, I feel like things would be different,” Bailey said.
Frontier Airlines provided a statement to Denver7 on the matter, confirming that a passenger had human trafficking concerns regarding the pair.
Concern was raised during the flight by another passenger seated near the woman and child and suspected of human trafficking. This passenger communicated these concerns to the flight crew and subsequently completed a written report during the flight to document her observations. The captain was notified and felt compelled to report the matter. Air transport is one of the most common means of human trafficking. The race played no role in the actions of the flight crew who followed established protocols
Denver7 has asked Frontier for a copy of this report and what established protocols the flight crew are following but has yet to receive a response.
In the meantime, Bailey and his family are considering filing a lawsuit against Frontier Airlines.
