Black fungus – New symptom found in diabetic patients Covid

We have an excess of coronavirus symptoms across the world and today we have one more terrifying symptom to consider. Almost 40 cases of mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, have been reported in Gujarat among those who have recovered from Covid-19. And eight people lost their sight in Surat because of it. The sudden loss of vision causes anxiety in patients.

However, mucormycosis, a fungal infection is still not a “big epidemic” in the country. This symptom is usually found in patients with Covid-19 who are diabetic. The black fungus is caused by a fungus called mucor, found on damp surfaces. So far we have reported people with diabetes and it is rare that we see mucormycosis in a person without diabetes.

The impact of the black fungus is dominant whether a diabetic patient is taking immunosuppressive drugs, steroids, or has cancer. These patients should avoid exposure to wet surfaces. Due to some drugs used in covid patients such as dexamethasone, prednisolone, methylprednisolone, dexona, etc., the compounds they contain suppress the immune system, causing fungal attacks in a diabetic patient.

In addition, when a diabetic patient infected with Covid is put on oxygen, which has a humidifier that contains water, the chances of contracting the fungal infection increase. When the fungus attacks, it is important to be treated immediately. But if left untreated or if treatment is delayed, the disease can lead to vision loss and, in some cases, increase mortality.

Speaking of the symptoms of black fungus, it appears three days after recovery from the Covid-19 infection. Starting from the sinus, it invades the eyes, ENT experts have said. In the next 24 hours, the black fungus can travel to the brain. The fungus is absolutely treatable and to do this the patient will be prescribed antifungal drugs such as amphotericin B, posaconazole or isavuconazole. These drugs can be taken by mouth or IV. The infection also requires surgery to remove the infected tissue
