Black Game of Thrones fans have built their own world around Westeros (HBO)

On Sunday night, a record 17 million people attended the first and eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, making it one of the latest examples of a collective viewing experience in American culture. And while we all enjoy the same show about conflicting kingdoms and flying dragons, black fans have built their own universe from Westeros.

They took a series with more magical creatures than recurring color characters and somehow turned it into something shamelessly black.

Rod Morrow and his wife, Karen, are hosts of The Black Guy Who Tips podcast and popularized the #DemThrones hashtag, in which black viewers place their own lens in dramatic turns.

"Black moments are, in my opinion, slightly different from the highlights of the series," said Morrow. The hashtag has everything from explicit black humor to in-depth analysis of elements of race, class and slavery in the series.

VICE News traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, to watch "The Black Guy Who Tips" in action, and then attended a restaurant party in Brooklyn.
