"Black-ish" renewed for season 6; Spinoff 'Mixed-ish' Ordered by ABC – Deadline

The Johnson will be back for another round. ABC has resumed a sixth season of its hit comedy series blackish for the 2019-2020 season. In addition, the network ordered at the beginning of the season to mixed, a consequence of the Rainbow Johnson experience (Tracee Ellis Ross) who grew up in a Métis family in the 80s.

Written by Peter Saji and Kenya Barris, in mixedRainbow Johnson (Ross) recounts her experience in an 80s Métis family and the dilemmas she faces in assimilating or staying true to herself. Bow's parents, Paul and Alicia, decide to move from a hippie community to the suburbs to better support their families. As his parents struggle to cope with the challenges of their new lives, Bow and his siblings move into an ordinary school in which they are not perceived as blacks or whites. The experiences of this family illustrate the challenges of finding one's own identity when the rest of the world can not decide on its membership.

The series stars Arica Himmel as a young Bow Johnson, Tika Sumpter as Alicia Johnson, Christina Anthony as Denise, Mykal-Michelle Harris as Santamonica Johnson and Ethan Childress as Johan Johnson.

Saji and Barris produce with Ross, Randall Winston, Artists First (Brian Dobbins), Cinema Gypsy (Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland) and Anthony Anderson. This series is produced by ABC Studios.

Mixed is the second blackish spin off. He joins the success adult, on Freeform, which is behind a mothership series backdoor pilot episode featuring Yara Shahidi's character, Zoey Johnson, as she goes to college. Grown-ish, who received a renewal at the beginning of season 3, returns for the second half of season 2 this summer on Freeform.
