Black Lives Matter’s recent praise for the Cuban government is not the first time BLM has praised the country’s communist regime.
BLM previously glorified Cuban dictator Fidel Castro in an article online after his death in November 2016.

BLM’s 2016 article highlighted “the lessons we learn from Fidel”.

In the post, BLM also expressed gratitude to Castro for harboring Assata Shakur, a convicted cop killer who fled to Cuba after her escape from prison in 1979. “As a black network engaged in transformation, we are particularly grateful to Fidel for detaining Mama Assata Shakur, who continues to inspire us. ”
“As Fidel ascends to the ancestral realm, we call on his guidance, strength and power as we re-engage in the struggle for universal freedom,” the message concluded. “Fidel Vive! ”
BLM is currently facing mounting backlash after issuing a statement Wednesday evening that blamed the suffering of the Cuban people on the US trade embargo with Cuba and praised the regime.
“The Cuban people are being punished by the US government because the country has maintained its commitment to sovereignty and self-determination,” the statement said. “America’s leaders have tried to crush this revolution for decades.”

Wednesday’s statement, which came amid a violent crackdown on protesters, also credited the Cuban government with “protecting black revolutionaries like Assata Shakur.”
BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors has many times congratulated Shakur in the past.
BLM has not responded to Fox News’ request for comment at press time.
