Black Ops Cold War works best on PS5 at 120 fps, best on XSX with ray tracing

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are now in the wild, and naturally fans are curious to see how each console performs when playing cross-platform titles. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a good test for this, as it is one of the most refined next-gen cross-platform games available and features both ray tracing and performance modes at 120 fps. Now, we’ve already taken you through a simple CoD frame rate test: Black Ops Cold War PS5 and XSX, but the tech leads at Digital Foundry also put the game to the test and applied a bit more analysis to it. their results. So which console works best? Well, it’s not as easy as you might think. In Ray Tracing / 60fps mode, the Xbox Series X comes out on top, running at very solid 60fps, while the PS5 occasionally drops as low as 40fps. Ah, but when you’re playing in the visually stripped-down 120 fps Performance mode, it’s the PS5 that comes out on top, often following the XSX version of 10 frames or more during the tougher hardware times.

It’s hard to say exactly why this disparity between the two consoles exists, as the PS5 and XSX offer more or less the same picture quality – the same dynamic resolution in 4K and Performance modes, the same strengths. XSX does better with ray tracing could certainly be considered an example of its superior GPU growl, but does the PS5 do better in 120 fps mode, proof of what the system’s variable frequency processor can do? Perhaps! Or maybe the differences are just random porting quirks. At this point, we don’t know.

Digital Foundry also tested the Xbox Series S version, which obviously comes with a few visual sacrifices – no ray tracing shadows like the other versions, a bit less environmental detail, and a dynamic resolution that targets 1440p, but can also drop down to 1200p. That said, the system manages to maintain a fairly consistent 60fps, with occasional drops in the mid-50s.

CoD: Black Ops Cold War is out now on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, PS4, and PS5. You can check out the full Wccftech review, here.
