The body of a black transgender woman was found burned in a car in Florida. Lawyers say she's the 18th transgender person known to have been murdered this year.
Hendry County Sheriff's authorities told the Palm Beach Post that Bee Love Slater, 23, was found "burned to death" in Clewiston, Florida, on Sept. 4, police said.
Captain Susan Harrelle of the Hendry County Sheriff's Department told the Miami Herald that Slater's death would not be considered a hate crime until she was able to "clearly prove" her mobile.
Friends pulled out pink balloons at a candlelight vigil for Slater last Friday. Dezmond Bass, 26, who attended the wake called Slater "a bundle of joy".
"It hurts me to see that it could happen to him," Bass said in the US TODAY'S HUI. "I did not want this to be swept under the carpet, I had to make sure everyone knew what had happened to him."
Jackson Jacksonn, who met Slater four years ago, said that she had been threatened on social media and that she was planning to leave the city, but that somebody "was not there. had had it before she was able to move it ".
Although Jackson does not think his death was a hate crime, he expressed his frustration at the slow pace of the police.
"How can a murder of this magnitude in such a small city happen without anyone knowing anything?" He asked. "Something is wrong with this picture."
Slater died the same week that Bailey Reeves, a 17-year-old black transgender teenager, was shot dead in Baltimore, according to the Campaign for Human Rights. In June, the American Medical Association described violence against transgender people as "epidemic".
"Our society must work so that trusted people can live without fear," Florida's American Civil Liberties Union said on Facebook after Slater's death.
