Warning: spoilers follow for Black Widow.
Black Widow star David Harbor has opened up on where he would like to see the Red Guardian story, if he returns to the MCU in the future.
During an interview with Insider, Harbor confirmed he was “down for more” stories that would involve him reprising the role of Red Guardian, having recently made his MCU debut in Marvel’s Black Widow. He shared two ideas that would further develop the character – one being a semi-origin story and the other taking place after Natasha’s death.
“I have two ideas,” Harbor revealed before delivering his mini-pitch. “You see Red Guardian in its prime. It’s interesting to me.” A prequel / origin story would be especially interesting, given that we never really get to see Red Guardian in its prime. It might even help resolve the somewhat unanswered question of whether he actually fought Captain America.
Harbor’s second idea is a little more conventional: “The other part of this story, has this experience with Natasha and has this lovely ending when he takes her hand and says, ‘I can’t even talk to you because I spoil it up. ‘ When he finds out that she was on that cliff with Hawkeye and maybe the version of the story he hears is that Hawkeye pushed her away or something, it’s a moment when Red Guardian turns around. back to the guy he was. Now he wants revenge on her. I think that would play out well. “
The Black Widow post-credits scene sets up a revenge story through a clip that shows Fontaine’s Contessa Valentina Allegra approaching Yelena with a new mission to track down and kill Hawkeye, having accused her of killing Hawkeye. Natasha. Thanks to Contessa, Yelena makes Hawkeye her next target without realizing that Natasha has willingly sacrificed herself.
The post-credits scene directly sets the stage for the upcoming Hawkeye series on Disney +. Florence Pugh previously confirmed that she is reprising her role as Yelena Belova, and now we have a better idea of how the character fits into the series. Harbor’s Red Guardian is currently not listed to appear, although it looks like they would have made the whole squad.
Hawkeye does not yet have a premiere date, but it is slated for release on Disney + in late 2021. The upcoming series will star Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfield as Kate Bishop, with Vera Farmiga, Eng. Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez.
