BlackBerry announced that BBM will be dead on May 31 and that people are upset

Future generations will never experience the tedious thrill of giving your BBM PIN to your cohort, as the messaging app will be officially dead on May 31st.

The app announced this week that it would stop supporting the once-popular service despite the company's efforts to keep it alive.

"Although we are sad to say goodbye, the time has come to end BBM's consumer service and move on," Emtek said in a statement, the company that managed the consumer offer of BBM. "We hope you will keep many memories of BBM's customer service, which has helped shape the messaging platforms to become what they are today."

The consumer version of BBM, managed by a partnership between BlackBerry and Emtek, has been expanded in recent years to be available on other types of terminals. BlackBerry maintains a paid business version, which it will now make available for personal use.

But even with that in mind, one has the impression of being at the end of an era and people are legitimately sad.

BBM was launched in 2005 and, for people of a certain age, it was the messaging app of their youth.

There are many sad GIFs circulating.

But you still have more than a month to enter this last ping.

You may also be surprised to learn that there are still BlackBerry's hard and fast.

Goodbye, BBM. Go slowly in this good night.
