Blackhawks to 2021 NHL Stars recap: score, stats, videos, highlights

The Blackhawks claimed their second victory over the Stars on Tuesday night with another 2-1 overtime victory. It’s their third consecutive victory in Chicago, raising the team’s record to 6-4-4 this season.

The scoring opened in the opening five minutes of the game, with Roope Hintz scoring for Dallas. That would be the only goal of the first half.

• The Stars almost went 2-0 in the second, but that goal was disallowed due to the interference of the goalkeeper, when Jamie Benn made contact with Kevin Lankinen.

It took the fourth power play opportunity for the Blackhawks’ offense to finally click. With John Klingberg in the box for the Stars, Mattias Janmark scored his fifth goal of the season, tying the game to one:

A scoreless third period sent the game into overtime, the second in a row for the Blackhawks and the third of the last four that took more hockey to decide.

Pius Suter scored on a pass from Brandon Hagel (with Lankinen getting the second assist for his first career NHL point), followed by a stick around Klingberg to win the game on that goal 3 on 3:

The four Chicago players on the ice for the game winner were rookies: Suter, Hagel, Lankinen and Ian Mitchell.

Notes

• The second power play unit continues to be better than the first. Dominik Kubalik a again counted in the score for each power-play goal that was scored with him on the ice. It doesn’t look like it will end anytime soon, as he showed great playing prowess on Janmark’s goal. The second unit finished with 0.26 expected goals against 0.09 for the first unit.
• Madison Bowey made her debut for the Blackhawks on Tuesday. He finished the match with 10:28 and blocked a shot. He had an expected goal percentage of 69.98, a team-high 5v5.
• The Blackhawks have reverted to the strategy of using seven defensemen in this game. This led to a decrease in time for the youngsters, as Lucas Carlsson finished with only 10:37 and Nicolas Beaudin 15:28. Mitchell did, however, have a solid look with 18:21. He looked great in his minutes and defended well in a Dallas offensive run in the third period.
• Jeremy Colliton, however, has involved young players much more generally. The only forward with a relatively short ice time was Philipp Kurashev at just 12:41 p.m. With 2:33 on the power play, it’s not like he didn’t have a chance to excel, because he collected his third assist.
• Patrick Kane’s five-game point streak came to an end in Tuesday’s game despite four shots on goal. But a much more dubious streak continued as Kane played his fourth straight game in 23 minutes, finishing with 24:13.
• The Blackhawks didn’t look good at the start of the second period. They only took two shots in the first 13 minutes of the frame and didn’t start getting more before their power play goal. They ended the period with eight shots on goal.
• This contributed to the poor results throughout the game, with Chicago having a 46% 5v5 shooting share. On the power play, the Blackhawks also had just four shots in 6:45.
• However, the attacking line that played the most together – Kane, Suter and Alex DeBrincat – had an expected goal share of 73.95% in 7:55 together. This line has played productive hockey together in the past.
• Jake Oettinger has been impressive throughout this two-game streak, keeping the struggling Stars’ offense into the game. He had a save percentage of .931 in that contest, despite the loss. He was also drafted with a pick that originally belonged to the Blackhawks as the 26th overall in 2017. The Blackhawks returned to select Henri Jokiharju that year.
• Lankinen played well in his first game against Dallas, making 34 saves on 35 shots. He also scored his first point in the NHL on the game winner Suter. But he gave up several rebound chances that could have been harmful. The defense in front did a good job of covering him up on these occasions.
