Every night at the Walter Kerr theater on Broadway, Hades, the king of an industrial underworld, boasts of his "chords and power lines" before bellowing, while the light comes on: "I run Electric City!
But on Saturday night, even the main character of "Hadestown" proved powerless.
The power outage that has obscured parts of the West Side of Manhattan has forced nearly all Broadway shows – as well as movie theaters, Carnegie Hall, a Jennifer Lopez concert at Madison Square Garden, a large portion of the Lincoln Center and many other smaller venues – and disappointing tourists who had gathered in the theaters for a Saturday night.
"There was a line of people waiting outside, so we hate not having to do the show for them," said Aaron Tveit, one of the stars of the "Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which is now in preview, declared with disappointment that it was leaving the closed theater of Hirschfeld. "I hope everyone is safe."
Electricity failed about one o'clock before the curtain for most shows, meaning that the actors and the team were already in place and that the audience was en route.

Some lucky customers have been treated to briefer pavement songs while the producers were trying to determine if the lights could come back in time to save on Saturday night – usually the most lucrative night of Broadway.
Outside "Hadestown", Andre De Shields (who plays Hermes in the award-winning series), accompanied by horn player, serenity in the crowd with a riff occulting "Road to Hell", the first issue of the show.
Even some Carnegie Hall performers entertained the voiceless crowds.
There are currently 30 broadcasts underway on Broadway, and the Broadway League said it believed that 26 of them had canceled their performances Saturday night. Only those located in the east side of Broadway could have occurred, including "Be More Chill" (at the Lyceum), "Beautiful" (at Stephen Sondheim), "Beetlejuice" (at the Winter Garden) and "Burn This" (at the Hudson).
Among those canceled were all the biggest Broadway players – "Hamilton", "Wicked", "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child", as well as the three Disney shows – " The lion king "," Aladdin "and" Frozen ". The Lincoln Center Theater has canceled its two Off Broadway shows, "In the Green" and "The Rolling Stone". Elsewhere on campus, a Mark Morris dance performance was canceled, as was a webcast of Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Summer Night Swing.
At 20 hours. on New World Stages – where several Off Broadway commercial shows take place, including "Jersey Boys" and "Rock of Ages" – the lobby was dark and a crowd of ticket holders stood motionless at the gates. Some participants, as confused as the spectators, said the shows were canceled and the tickets paid by credit card would be refunded. Outside, the cast of "Rock of Ages" sang for the clients.
Martine Sainvil, a spokeswoman for the Broadway League, said tickewolders should contact their point of sale for information on refunds and exchanges.
