Blake Shelton says anyone who reviews the lyrics to his new single, “Minimum Wage,” knows nothing about country music.
The voice the coach launched his “classic country love songNew Years Eve, which drew mixed reviews on social media. With lyrics like “Girl, lookin ‘at you lookin’ at me that way / Can make a man feel rich with minimum salary,” Shelton sings about how priceless true love is. Some people called him “your deafDuring a period of record unemployment amid the coronavirus pandemic, especially since the superstar is not struggling financially.
Shelton responded to the reaction by telling CMT, “These days there are people who don’t want to know the truth. They just want to hear what they want to hear and they want to fight. “
“Whatever your intention, whatever the truth, they want it to be something that they can be upset about so that they can go to social media and try to make headlines,” he continued. “With ‘minimum wage’, I first thought, ‘Wow, I guess I missed something here.’ And the more I read this, I realized that it really wasn’t real. Regardless of that reaction, there are only four or five people who probably don’t know anything about country music.
Gwen Stefani’s fiancé said anyone who was upset “obviously hasn’t heard the song or read the lyrics.”
“If they had, they wouldn’t be able to feel that from the song. It’s literally a love song about how if times are tight and you don’t have a lot of money – as long as you have love and are happy – at the end of the day , that’s all we can really hope for, “he said.” You have it if you have it. That’s all that matters. And if that shocks you, we’ll just have to accept that we won’t be Okay.
Shelton said he would “step back” if people started to be this picky.
“I have to say if we’re going to start thinking like that, then I guess this will be where I have to step back.” Because it’s one of the oldest traditions in country music, it’s the lyrics of love. And if you have love, that’s all that matters, ”he added. “There won’t be much left to play or write on country radio if it’s something we have to think twice. So I’m going to release the records that resonate with me and my life and not look back. As country artists and as an industry, we need to stay focused here and know that what’s right is right. And I think this song is a great message and I’m proud of it.
After his New Years Eve performance, Shelton saw reviews online – but he felt like it “didn’t even deserve an answer.”
“That’s why I didn’t go out at the start and didn’t say anything, because they are not entitled to a response from me,” he said. “It’s absolutely ridiculous.”
During the interview, Shelton added how he “relates so much to the lyrics” as he struggles financially before hitting things big.
“Just like probably 95% of artists, I struggled for so long to get by. But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t trade those moments for nothing, ”he explained. “Those days when the big fight was, ‘Dude, do I pay my rent or my electric bill, or do I just say fuck and go buy some beer?'”
