Blake Shelton doesn’t apologize for his latest single, “Minimum Wage” – which some called “deaf tone” – because he thinks these people are just looking to “fight”.
“I just feel like there are people these days who don’t want to know the truth,” he told CMT. “They just want to hear what they want to hear and they want to fight.”
“Whatever your intention, whatever the truth, they want it to be something that they can be upset about so that they can go to social media and try to make headlines.”
Shelton, 44, was criticized for a line in the song that read, “Girl, your love can make a man feel rich on minimum wage.”
After her debut on NBC’s New Years Eve show, one person tweeted: “The irony of listening to millionaire Blake Shelton sing about ‘minimum wage love’ at the end of 2020 could be lost for its target audience.
Shelton told CMT that after hearing the reviews he first thought to himself, “Wow, I guess I just missed something here.”
“Regardless of that reaction, there are only four or five people who probably don’t know anything about country music,” he said.
The “Voice” coach said “Minimum Wage” is a “love song” about “how if times are tight and you don’t have a lot of money – as long as you have love. and that you are happy – at the end of the day, that’s all any of us can really hope for.
“You have it if you have it,” he said. “That’s all that matters. And if that offends you, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
Shelton added, “I think this song is a great message and I’m proud of it.”
