Blasio says New York is very jaded about Amazon

Mayor Bill de Blasio gives Amazon a cold shoulder, saying the online sales giant will not get any help from the city if it prepares to move to the West Side of Manhattan.

"Look, if Amazon decides, like Google and other tech companies, that they will expand their presence in New York, it's their choice," de Blasio said at an independent press conference of City Hall on Tuesday. .

"It does not surprise me at all, but again, they will have to do it themselves," he said.

The mayor was speaking Monday in The Post's exclusive newspaper that the tech giant was negotiating with the owners of two new skyscrapers one block west of Penn Station.

Amazon buys offices at the newly-built One Manhattan West, and its sister project, Two Manhattan West, soon to be completed, after canceling a contract to open a second head office in Queens, said sources at The Post.

"I have not had discussions with them," said the mayor.

"You know that we are very jaded now after entering into a full agreement that I thought was a fair deal with which they had just left in the middle of the night," he said.

"They did not talk to me. They did not contact me, but if they do something for themselves and it creates jobs, well, that's good, then, "he said.

City Council President Corey said Johnson Amazon's representatives did not contact him either, even though both towers were in his district.

Nevertheless, he was more optimistic about the potential second coming of the Seattle behemoth in the Big Apple.

"I welcome Amazon. That would be right. There would be tax subsidies and I think that's an appropriate way for Amazon to come to town, "added Johnson.

State tax relief for Amazon's planned initial relocation to Long Island City would not apply to an outpost in downtown Manhattan.

Julie Samuels, of the Tech: NYC advocacy organization, which represents 700 companies, said the business community was supporting the West Side area.

"I think and think that a large part of the community I work with welcomes Amazon's growth here with open arms. The types of jobs we will see through Amazon's increased presence – and the growth in the number of other technology companies, large and small – are the jobs of tomorrow, "said Samuels.
