VENICE, Italy (Reuters) – Popular film star Julie Andrews, "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music," said Monday that she was "blessed" to have had a long and illustrious career in film as laureate a prize for excellence for life at the Venice Film Festival.

The 83-year-old, who won an Oscar in 1965 for portraying the strict but generous nanny Mary Poppins, stood firm and embraced the Golden Lion Award for overall achievements to an applauding public.

"I consider myself very lucky to have spent a large part of my professional life in the film arts," she said.

"I am always amazed by the fact that I was the lucky girl who was asked to play these wonderful roles."

Andrews began her career as a child actress in the West End of London before heading to Broadway.

"Mary Poppins" has made it an international star. She then starred in films such as "Victor / Victoria" and "The Princess Diaries". She recently lent her voice to the hit movie "Aquaman" of 2018.
