To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Blizzard today announced the re-releases of three of its oldest games: Rock N Roll Racing, The Lost Vikings and Blackthorne. These come a little imagined in the Blizzard Arcade collection, with features like rewinding and additional levels, as well as a “ museum ” of old development and interview assets. It’s now available on PC, but currently only if you purchase the Blizzard BlizzCon Goodies Jackpot.
The collection includes all three games in their original versions as well as new, more sophisticated final editions. The Lost Vikings and Blackthrone will let you save anywhere, as well as a “ watch mode ” that lets players watch the games, then jump and take control whenever they want. And they’re all complemented by collections of “game art, development assets, unused content, lore, interviews and more.”
1992’s The Lost Vikings is a puzzle-platformer starring three beefy boys who must combine their different abilities. Its Def Ed is a mix of the different console versions, according to Blizzard, “combining the superior audio and visual experience of the first version with the additional scenes and cutscenes, and support for up to three players in local co-op,” which were added in a later version. “/ p>
Rock N ‘Roll Racing is a top-down killer car game, first released in 1993. Def Ed enters 16: 9 resolutions, increases split-screen multiplayer count from two to four, adds more. snow and rain, appears in additional tracks, slips into “real recordings” of songs from the soundtrack, and into new songs and voiceover clips too.
And Blackthorne from 1994 is a shooty, somewhat Flashback-ish platformer. I can’t say I know this one. Its Def Ed adds an area visible only in the 32-bit version and a map that fills up as you explore.
Honestly, I don’t have a lot of memories of all this – do you fancy a return visit, gang?
The Blizzard Arcade Collection is “currently” exclusively available on PC as part of Blizzard’s Celebration Collection, a bunch of doodads for a bunch of their games, which starts at £ 16.79. Do you hope that they will also sell it separately? They already sell it separately on Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox.
