SHELBY CO., Tenn. – BlockBoy JB, Memphis rap star, is scheduled to perform again on Friday night at the Beale Street Music Festival, although he was arrested this morning on several charges. He was released from prison around 4:45 pm Friday.

The rapper, whose real name is James Baker, is charged with Felon's conviction for possession of a handgun, speeding, possession of narcotics and possession of controlled substance Marijuana.

BlocBoy JB is scheduled to hit the FedEx stage at 7:20 pm tonight.

The rapper was arrested by Shelby County MPs on Friday afternoon, along with several others, in a house near Shelby Drive and Forest Hill Irene Road.

The SCSO members stated that this was part of a multi-agency survey. Authorities said 20 people were arrested at home.

Baker's lawyer told FOX13 that the investigators did not go to the rapper's home to pick him up, but rather to someone he knew.

"They were not looking for him and there was no warrant against him personally," said Wells. "They may have been looking for other suspects on the scene."

However, according to an affidavit relating to his arrest, the rapper was the subject of a warrant because the investigators thought he was hiding a wanted man. He was not charged with any fugitive related crime, which was found in the attic while the detectives were executing a search warrant.

The investigators spent the day looking for and removing items from Baker's house. Initially, officials did not specify what had been taken, but arrest documents indicate drugs and several firearms were seized as evidence.

The arrest took place less than 24 hours before the scheduled date for BlocBoy JB at the Beale Street Music Festival.

Robert Griffin, a spokesman for Memphis in May, told FOX13 that BlocBoy JB would be performing tonight after being released on bail. Prison records show the rapper got a $ 15,000 bail.

Griffin said that BlocBoy JB had not been sentenced, so it would be premature to remove him from the festival.

The rapper had been arrested for drug and gun charges in Shelby County on February 28, 2019, following an incident that occurred in July 2018.
