The Columbus Blue Jackets and Winnipeg Jets have struck up a trade that sees each team receiving an unhappy superstar from the other. Winger Patrik Laine heads to Columbus while Pierre-Luc Dubois heads to Winnipeg.
Dubois has told Blue Jackets management he wants to be traded as he negotiates his recent two-year, $ 10 million contract extension before training camp. The front office only felt compelled to immediately honor its request recently, when coach John Tortorella decided to bench the No.3 pick in the 2016 draft in the first period of Thursday’s game.
Laine, meanwhile, asked his agent to reveal to TSN that it would be “mutually beneficial” for the 22-year-old and the Winnipeg franchise to go their separate ways this offseason. He has appeared in only one game for the Jets this year with an upper-body injury, and currently sits on the injured reserve.
Dubois has been an absolute stud over the past two seasons, with his best year to come in the 2018-19 season where he racked up 27 goals and 34 assists. The following year, he registered 18 goals and 31 assists, but also drenched a points per game performance in the playoffs with four goals and six assists in 10 games. Laine was an All Star in 2017 in a season where he had 44 goals and 70 points.
Columbus forward Jack Roslovic who is returning to his hometown is also part of the deal. Columbus also gives Winnipeg their third-round pick in 2022.
