Ahead of tonight’s game against the Rangers, the Blue Jays have named the reliever Joel payamps for assignment. The move freed up space for the reintegration of another arm of the lift pen Ryan borucki from the 60-day injured list.
The designation of Payamps is a bit of a surprise, as the right-hander has worked at a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings this season. This is the second best score of the Jays’ seven relievers who have thrown more than 20 executives this year. Payamps’ field independent metrics do not fully support this level of execution prevention. His 18.5% strikeout rate is well below the league average of 24.5% for relievers, while his 9.9% walk percentage is decent but unspectacular.
That said, Payamps generated swinging hitting at a good 11.6% rate, so it’s fair to assume he might take out a few more hitters in the future. He’s also been one of the best pitchers in the game to avoid hard contact, and he can be picked for the rest of the season. Between his performances and the flexibility of his roster, it would not be surprising if Payamps arouses the interest of other clubs via an exchange or a waiver request. Toronto will have a week to exchange it or expose it to the wire.
Borucki has been absent since early May with a strained forearm flexor. Before injuring himself, the left-hander clocked a 4.05 / 3.25 SIERA ERA in 13 2/3 innings.
