American BMX rider Connor Fields has been taken out of intensive care after crashing in the semi-finals of the Tokyo Games, USA Cycling has reported.
Fields, 28, suffered a brain hemorrhage in the frightening crash on Friday, the national sports governing body said in a statement.
“After a night in intensive care, doctors are happy to report that there has been no further bleeding and that no new injuries have been found,” USA Cycling said. “Fields has been removed from the intensive care unit and will remain in the hospital until cleared.”
Fields’ father Mike Fields told USA Today the results have been looking positive so far.
“Cognitively, he’s doing fine,” he told the newspaper. “He knows where he is. He knows his date of birth. He recognizes people.”
Fields left the course on a stretcher after crashing into the first corner of the semi-finals.
He won gold in BMX Racing at the Rio 2016 Games, becoming the first American to win the Olympic event since his debut at the Beijing Games in 2008.
He had qualified for the final in Tokyo but could not run. Dutchman Niek Kimmann won gold.
“For me, it’s sad that he couldn’t defend his gold medal,” Kimmann said.
“Like, he basically qualified for the final… he had enough points to qualify but he couldn’t be there. So like I said, I hope he’s okay and I can’t wait to fight with Connor again soon, ”Kimmann said.
